Button Stools and Button Platters

Karina Clarke

2003-2008

Karina’s studio explorations of plastic and ceramic examines the dialogues of design craft and manufacturing engaged in the small-scale production of seats and ceramic bowls. Local manufacturers were engaged in the development of tooling and production with the specific aim of advancing a design dialogue within Australian manufacturing systems. The Button Platter was profiled in ‘Domain’, The Sydney Morning Herald in November 2003, while the stool was included in a preliminary national study of new plastics materials for rotational moulding (Repocol). Funded by industry research grants in 2003, and Faculty grants (2000, 2004), the Button Stools were exhibited at Workshopped ’03 in The Strand Arcade Sydney, the COFA Exhibition/Performance Space (2003), and The Professional Exhibition, Tokyo Design Week, Tokyo (2004). The stools were subsequently specified and purchased by leading Sydney architects SJB for The Eastern Hotel at Bondi Junction. Aspects of this research were published in: Karina Clarke, ‘Design Futures: Connecting real life experiences and industrial processes in studio based projects,’ ConnectED International Conference on Design Education, Sydney, 2007.
